My vote: Lost Coast Brewery, “Downtown Brown” ale.
Excellent piece–particularly the stats about how many breweries there have been in the US throughout the years. From a high of 3000 in pre-refrigeration days to a low of a few a dozen after WWII (I think they said 4… but I don’t believe it).
I have been to Ireland, London, and Tokyo and I think America has a superior beer market–although with the caveat that American microbrews tend to be pricey, but you can get some really cheap variety in Ireland.
Also what the brewers had to say about “Big Beer”–they create the most inoffensive tasting beer and then rely on advertising and image. Apparently its very difficult to do that, reach the lowest common denominator of taste… but a good marketing strategy.
